McDonald’s is Brewing a Battle Over COFFEE DRINKS Against Starbucks
McDonald’s is brewing a battle over COFFEE DRINKS against Starbucks.
There will be a new battle brewing in the coffee drinks department, as McDonald’s announced on Wednesday a new set of espresso-based drinks to their menu. They are naming their coffee drinks the caramel macchiato, Americano, and vanilla cappuccino. Starbucks must be fuming, as Dunkin Donuts already took some of Starbucks’ market share away. Add McDonald’s to the mix, which will certainly cause damage to the Seattle-based mega brand.
How much will these McDonald’s coffee drinks cost? The beverages will cost $2 for a limited time. Not bad in comparison to Starbucks prices, as their tall caramel macchiato costs $3.95.
In a separate announcement, McDonald’s will start selling their coffee drinks in supermarkets. In February 2017, Dunkin Donuts entered the supermarket business as well. Starbucks, though, is way ahead of these giants, as they entered this market in 1996. Still, McDonald’s feels like it is better late than never as the coffee drinks industry has significantly grown.
Chris Kempczinski, president of McDonald’s USA, said in a statement: “This is just the start of our McCafé commitment. We understand how important the coffee culture is for consumers and we are committed to meeting that demand at the taste, convenience and value only McDonald’s can offer.” We will see if Starbucks will be able to recover from this action.
