Sonatina for Flute, Op. 11

Sonatina for Flute

Sonatina for Flute, Op. 11.

In 2014, I wrote a Sonatina for Flute, Op. 11. Piccolo performer Diana Duarte made a suggestion to me to make this piece for Piccolo, which I did. This composition is a one movement work. The World Premiere took place by Rogier de Pijper in The Netherlands.

I was invited by flutist Tigran Arakelyan to Boston to spend some time on vacation. While walking on the street, I started to hum a tune which was very Armenian in nature (energetic yet in minor key) and sang it to my friend. Tigran loved the theme and said to write it for Flute, which I did and there began the process of writing my Sonatina for Flute.

I said that “I wanted to write a piece for solo Flute that did not need a piano accompaniment, which would encompass a wide variety of moods and energy. This piece had to have energy, be lyrical, and feel like the piano had no business being there. The music flowed quite well, which rarely used to be the case during my life.”

Piccolo Player Diana Duarte wrote: “I had the pleasure to know and record the Sonatina from composer Arshak Andriasov. When I heard the midi file (Flute version) he posted on YouTube, I thought it would be a lot of joy and fun to play this piece. Suddenly, it caught my attention to share an idea with Arshak of making this piece for the piccolo flute.” Full Article.
